THE DEPARTMENT
The City of Visalia's Public Works Department serves the Public and other City Departments by providing Solid Waste and Recycling Services, Streets Maintenance, Traffic Maintenance, Fleet Management, Water Collection and Treatment, Engineering Services, as well as Conservation efforts.  With over 150 employees, the Public Works Department is one of the largest departments within the City.  Each Division is responsible for the development and implementation of services provided to or for the Public. The Division's staff is committed to customer service, safety, and providing high-quality services to other City Departments and the Public.

POSITION
The City is seeking a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor to lead the Fleet Maintenance Division. The Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the City's entire fleet of vehicles and equipment, including the ongoing preventative maintenance and repair of over 600 City vehicles and pieces of equipment.  In addition, the Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing numerous related supplier contracts, internal cost tracking, and the ongoing operations of the division.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be a self-managing, detail oriented professional, who is organized and has experience in the field of repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. The candidate must be able to make hiring decisions, assign work, supervise, train, discipline and evaluate the performance of subordinate staff. They will oversee the division budget, contract management, and review and approve unit expenditures, participate in the purchasing processes including requisitions, purchase orders, invoices, and reviewing vendor payments. The ideal candidate will also direct the division safety programs and ensure all required training and meetings are completed and logs turned in.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:

  • Five (5) years of journey-level experience in equipment repair, maintenance and operations, including two (2) years experience in a lead capacity.
  • Specialized training in equipment maintenance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver's License.
