Salary: $10,127 - $13,570 / Month

Under direction of the Director of Public Works, the Senior Civil Engineer provides high-level engineering services for the City of Mill Valley. The Senior Civil Engineer provides administrative, professional, and technical assistance to the Public Works Director, manages municipal engineering staff and may act on behalf of the Director as assigned.

Examples of assignments include:

  • Designing, implementing and managing Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Overseeing land development review and associated coordination with Planning and Building Department staff and applicants
  • Managing flood, drainage, stormwater prevention programs and projects
  • Addresses traffic operational and safety concerns
  • Submitting/certifying sanitary sewer system reports and overseeing the program
  • Issuing encroachment permits and supervising the encroachment process

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six years of increasingly responsible experience in operation and maintenance of public works, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity, preferably as a section manager or above. The candidate should also possess a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and be registered as a Civil Engineer in the State of California. The ideal candidate will be an effective communicator, highly skilled manager and driven to resolve challenges.



  • Health Insurance – The City pays the full premium for the Kaiser Family Plan and up to the same amount for an HMO with Western Health Advantage. Currently both plan options (Kaiser or Western Health Advantage) have premiums covered by the City so there is no out-of-pocket cost to the employee paid toward the monthly premium.
  • Dental Insurance – The City pays the full premium for family coverage with Delta Dental.
  • Leave – the City offers generous leave, including:
    • Vacation – 2 to 5 weeks depending on service time
    • Sick – 12 days per year
    • Holidays – 15 total (11 named plus 4 floating) per year
    • Administrative Leave – up to 5 days per year
  • Retirement
    • New employees with no prior CalPERS service or that have a break in CalPERS service of 6 months or more: 2% @ 62
    • New employees who are “classic” CalPERS members and do not have a break in service of more than 6 months: 2% @ 55
    • 457 Deferred Compensation Plan (with up to $600 in matching by the City)
  • Schedule –City staff typically work a “9/80” schedule with alternating Fridays off. This position is eligible for consideration of hybrid telework options and flexible hours following successful completion of a probationary period.

    • City pays the premiums for a $50,000 life insurance plan, as well as Long-Term Disability insurance.
