Carlsbad - The Community:  The City of Carlsbad is ideally situated in north San Diego County where a great climate, beautiful beaches and lagoons, and abundant natural open space combine with world-class resorts, family attractions, well planned neighborhoods, excellent schools, and a charming village atmosphere to create the ideal California experience. Covering nearly 40 square miles, the City of Carlsbad is currently home to about 115,000 residents. Thanks to an award-winning growth management plan, the city's infrastructure and services keep pace with development and promote an excellent quality of life.

The Position: Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of public works maintenance tasks, including operating light equipment and moderate heavy power-driven equipment, and other duties associated with the department's work activities.

The Street Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class in the maintenance worker series and normally performs a variety of unskilled and semiskilled maintenance tasks - although trucks and other motorized equipment may be operated by a Street Maintenance Worker I, the equipment is used on a training basis for tasks which are repetitious in nature.  Under this training concept, Street Maintenance Worker I can expect to advance to the Street Maintenance Worker II level by demonstrating the required competencies and obtaining their Class A California Driver's License within the first year of employment.

The Street Maintenance Worker II is the journey level in the maintenance worker series.  Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform semi-skilled and skilled public works maintenance activities with greater independence.  They will also be required to operate light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment on a continuous basis.

As a condition of employment the Street Maintenance Worker II must submit to random drug testing as required by the Department of Transportation and City of Carlsbad regulations and guidelines.

Employees may be required to perform stand by work and are considered emergency service workers.
