Franklin County, Virginia is currently accepting applications for the position of Director of Public Works – County Engineer.
This growing community, known for its scenic beauty and exceptional outdoor recreational opportunities, is nestled between Philpott and Smith Mountain Lakes along the Blue Ridge Mountains, and located approximately 10 miles south of Roanoke, VA. The Director of Public Works – County Engineer will perform complex, difficult, management and technical work to oversee the activities, projects and operations of the Public Works Department including Engineering, Solid Waste Disposal and Collection Operations, Capital Projects Management, Budget Development, Utilities Planning, and Construction Administration. This position provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the County Administrator’s office.
Knowledge of land development, storm water, and solid waste management including State standards for operations required; supervisory skills and applicable engineering experience necessary; must be able to maintain excellent community relations and foster a positive working relationship with stakeholders, employees, public officials, and the general public. Knowledge of heavy equipment capabilities and maintenance is preferred. State Solid Waste Landfill Operator license required within one year of employment.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in civil or environmental engineering, construction management, public administration, or a related field is required. Equivalent combination of experience and training will be considered. Supervisory experience in Public Works administration and Capital projects construction or related field is required.
