The City of Belvidere, Illinois is seeking a highly motivated, qualified individual to serve as its Assistant Director of Public Works. The Assistant Director of Public Works reports to the Director of Public Works and provides management and oversight of the Public Works Department consisting of 31 employees and an annual operating budget of $7.5 million.


The Assistant Director of Public Works is hired by the Director of Public Works with consent of the Mayor and is an integral part of the public works team. The City of Belvidere is a home rule community that operates under the Mayor/Council form of government with 10 elected aldermen. Located in Boone County, Illinois, the City of Belvidere enjoys significant commercial and industrial investments including Stellantis (formerly Chrysler) assembly plant, General Mills food processing plant, Dean Foods food processing plant, and several other manufacturing operations. The community is served by excellent schools and offers a variety of outdoor activities through an extensive park system.


Qualifications: An Associate’s Degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Public Administration, or related field with at least four years of increasingly responsible public works operations or civil engineering experience is required. Any combination of education and experience that provides the equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered. The Assistant Director of Public Works must have strong communication skills and a demonstrated enthusiasm for collaborating with others.


The salary range is $70,000- $80,000 DOQ. The City of Belvidere offers a comprehensive benefit plan which includes health, dental, life insurance, the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, optional 457 plan, and paid vacation, sick, and holiday time.
