City Engineer
Salary: $109,899.27 – $140,261.66
Responsibilities:
An employee in this class plans, directs, and supervises engineering activities within the Public Works Department under the general direction of the Public Works Director. This position requires a high level of independent judgement and initiative. The ideal candidate is a creative problem solver who operates with a sense of urgency and a focus on results, with high levels of diplomacy and a relationship approach to the operation.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises the employees within the Engineering Division. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of modern principles and practices of civil engineering and public works administration
- Thorough knowledge of the sources of engineering information and facility in the application of engineering methods
- Good knowledge of budgetary control and preparation
- Some knowledge of City fiscal administration
- Ability to direct and supervise Public Works activities in a coordinated manner
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, other agencies, contractors, and the public
- Must take initiative and be resourceful
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
- Minimum of seven (7) years of engineering experience in Public Works
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Registered as a Professional Engineer through the State of Iowa, or the ability to obtain registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of Iowa within one year of appointment is required.
