GENERAL PURPOSE: 

Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City buildings and grounds, cemeteries, parks, parking lots, roads, sidewalks, storm water drainage system, and trees; and other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the close supervision of the Crew Chief.  In absence of Crew Chief, most senior Public Works Maintenance Worker will supervise subordinate staff.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Serves as lead worker over lower seniority maintenance, laborer, and seasonal workers.  In the absence of the Crew Chief, may assume temporary duties if seniority dictates.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspect, maintain, and repair buildings and grounds, cemeteries, parks, parking lots, roads, sidewalks, storm water drainage system, trees, and other division facilities at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.

Assist Water & Sewer Division in emergency call backs.

Provide building maintenance as needed.

Maintain a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity at buildings and grounds, cemeteries, parks, parking lots, roads, sidewalks, storm water drainage system, trees, other division facilities, etc.

Determine the locations of gas, telephone, electric, fiber, television, storm lines, water lines, and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.

Respond to complaints regarding buildings and grounds, cemeteries, parks, parking lots, roads, sidewalks, storm water drainage system, trees, etc.; evaluate situation; explain findings to supervisor.

 

Contact residents and business owners in area where repairs will be conducted and explain when repairs will be completed.

Drive trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand.

Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor; and clean and check equipment and tools after use.

Operate light and medium-sized construction and power equipment such as mechanized broom, vactor truck, street sweeper, and/or backhoe/loader.

Perform all duties in conformance to departmental policy, and appropriate safety and security standards.

Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, and maintenance and/or repair of buildings and grounds, cemeteries, parks, parking lots, roads, sidewalks, storm water drainage system, trees, and other division facilities.

Assist in the training of lower-level employees to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction, and repair of buildings and grounds, cemeteries, parks, parking lots, roads, sidewalks, storm water drainage system, trees and other division facilities.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Serve on various employee or other committees as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience relating to any of the following is preferred:
  • Construction, concrete flatwork, tree trimming, heavy equipment operation, and lawn maintenance including irrigation systems construction, maintenance, or repair involving underground utilities; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and     procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities involving underground utilities.

 

  • Skill in operation with some of the tools and equipment listed below.

 

  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.

 

  • Ability to work safely.

 

  • Ability to operate and maintain various equipment used in the public works division such as backhoe, dump truck, and street sweeper.

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.

 

  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL) minimum class “B” certification with Air Brake Endorsement & Tanker Endorsement or obtain a CDL with endorsements within 90 days of hire.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Knowledge of motorized vehicles and equipment including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, vactor truck, street roller, backhoe, manlift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, asphalt patching equipment, compressors, sanders, generators, trencher, concrete cutting saw, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather ranging from extreme cold to extreme heat and humid conditions.  The employee frequently will be required to assist excavation for cemetery burial and assist excavation for water main or sewer repairs.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, icy surfaces, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, confined spaces, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
