Under direction assumes lead in directing the work of small crews engaged in grounds, street, sewer, tree maintenance work, building maintenance, or in miscellaneous small construction projects; generates and maintains records; schedules crew activities; and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (include but are not limited to the following)
The Leadworker for Sewer Maintenance is primarily responsible for leading and directing sewer maintenance crews in maintaining the City's sewer system. The system includes approximately 87.6 miles of sewer mains and 1,637 sewer manholes. There are no lift stations in the sewer system. Essential job duties include: maintaining records and scheduling for the operation of the root cutter to remove tree roots in sewer main lines and laterals; maintaining records and scheduling for the application of chemical treatments to inhibit root growth in sewer lines where tree roots were removed and the control of roach infestation; scheduling and maintaining records with the sewer/storm drain vacuum truck to clean catch basins to comply with NPDES requirements and the Sewer System Management Plan; scheduling of work orders for sewer main lines and storm drain catch basins; maintaining materials and equipment related to the Sewer Division including atmospheric detectors, everyday safety supplies, certification updates, and inventory of sewer related materials; and maintaining records for the City Yard and Police Department clarifiers and proper disposal of collected materials from the combination vehicle. Performs related duties as required.
This class operates within the Public Works Department and reports to the Public Works Superintendent. This class works with and leads small crews in performing assignments included under "Essential Job Duties."
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Basic supervisory methods and practices in directing work of small crews; coordinating assignments with personnel; scheduling of crew activities regarding preventative maintenance related to Sewer and Storm drain collection systems; basic record keeping; and maintaining supplies, materials, and equipment used in sewer maintenance work.
Follow simple blueprints, sketches, maps, and rough working diagrams; use chemicals and pesticides in a safe and proper manner; communicate oral instructions clearly and simply; comprehend written and oral directions; maintain records; lift heavy objects properly; operate and maintain equipment used in maintenance work; use such tools and equipment as drills, scissor lift, fork lift, backhoe, sewer jetter, camera truck, trash pumps, and gas/oxygen detector; and extend courtesy and cooperation to the public.
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE/ LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
Graduation from High School or G.E.D. required; possession of a California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Grade 1 Certificate in Collection System Maintenance required; possession of C.W.E.A. Collection System Maintenance Grade 2 and a California Department of Pesticide Regulation Q.A.C. License in Landscape, Right of Way and Sewer Line Root Control highly desirable, or shall obtain within one year of hire date. Possession of a valid California Class B Driver License and proof of insurability is required.
