The City of Vacaville invites applications for the position of
Assistant Director of Public Works - Engineering Services/City Engineer
The Assistant Director of Public Works - Engineering Services manages and oversees all programs, activities and operations within the Engineering Services Division of the Public Works Department. Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:
- Works closely with the Public Works Director to shape the Division priorities, guide strategic planning and advance major initiatives.
- Oversees the City’s Engineering Services Division, including development engineering oversight, capital project planning, civil engineering design, construction management and inspection for streets, utilities, transportation systems and public facilities.

Assists in developing and implementing department goals, objectives, policies and procedures.

Manages and mentors engineering, professional, technical and administrative staff, sets work priorities, monitors work flow and reviews and evaluates work products, methods and procedures.

Serves as the City Engineer.

Salary Information
$181,113.45 - $220,122.02/Annually
2% COLA increase is scheduled for 11/01/2026

This position has 9/75 work schedule, which includes every other Friday off.
The Public Works Department currently has one vacancy, but this recruitment will also establish an eligibility list that may be used over the next 12-month period.
The ideal candidate will have excellent problem solving and customer service skills, the ability to multi-task and manage change, and proven management and leadership skills. Some other ideal knowledge, skills and/or abilities are:
- Ability to energize and motivate a wide range of staff and personalities towards division and department-level goals
- Experience with the management of public works engineering operations
- Experience managing municipal public works civil engineering design and construction management, construction inspection and land surveying
- Ability to organize and prioritize goals, objectives and projects
- Experience managing a large number of staff and teams
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field.
Experience: Six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in professional civil engineering, including two years of management responsibility.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a Professional Civil Engineer Certificate of Registration with the State of California is required.
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
