About the Position

We are seeking a highly motivated, highly skilled, innovative, and enthusiastic individual to join the City of Half Moon Bay Public Works Department as an Assistant Engineer.  As a critical member of our team you’ll be performing entry level professional civil engineering work that will include design, construction, inspection and coordination of public works and other capital projects; assist with the management for assigned projects; provide engineering support to other engineering staff and projects both within the office and in the field. 

This position reports directly to the City Engineer. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking un-siloed professional experience.  The duties and reporting relationships provide an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking service time as an Engineer In Training (EIT). 

What You Will Do:

The Assistant Engineer is typically tasked with providing support to development review, minor project design and conducting research, plan checks and field inspections in support of the engineering and capital improvements program.

What You Bring

We are looking for sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of this classification.  Knowing that any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge skills and abilities would be qualifying. Such as:

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in civil engineering, or a related field; and
  • No experience is required, although some practical technical experience or an internship is desirable.  Plus
  • Possess a valid California class “C” Driver's License and Possession of an Engineer in Training Certificate is preferred. Registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California is strongly encouraged within one year of hire.

Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of civil engineering; computer applications related to the work; applicable laws, codes and regulations.

Skill to:
Conduct research, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations and prepare effective technical staff reports.

Ability to:
Perform engineering design computations, review consultant and private engineer designs and prepare less complex engineering plans and studies.


Ideal Candidate

Will be highly motivated, highly skilled, innovative, and enthusiastic individual that is career oriented.  He/she will have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in civil engineering, or a related field, and some practical technical experience and/or an internship.  Plus -  a valid California class “C” Driver's License and possession of an Engineer in Training Certificate as preferred. 



Retirement: PERS Classic employee receives 2% at 55; single highest year and PEPRA employee receives 2% at 62, with highest 3 years. Classic employees pay 7% employee contribution and PEPRA employees pay half the normal costs (currently 7.25%). The City of Half Moon Bay does not participate in Social Security, except the required Medicare.

Health Insurance: Employee can choose from medical plans provided through CalPERS. Dental Insurance is available through Delta Dental and Vision coverage is available through VSP. The City provides an allowance of $1,800 per month, which can be used for medical premiums. Any unused portion may be taken as additional compensation.

Dental and Vision premiums are paid by the employer up to family coverage. 

Other Insurance: The City provides long-term disability coverage equal to 2/3 of monthly salary to a maximum of $6,000/mo.

Life Insurance: City provides coverage equal to 1 X annual base salary.

Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year.

Vacation: Accrual of 12 days annually for the first four years; increasingly periodically thereafter to 23 days annually after 21 years.

Administrative Leave: 12 days per year. Sick Leave: Accrual at the rate of 12 days per year.

Education Incentive: $1,500 annually for eligible expenses upon approval.

Deferred Compensation: Voluntary participation in ICMA or CalPERS 457 plans are available.
