City of McHenry (pop 27,000) is seeking candidates for the position of Public Works Director. The current Director is retiring after 35 years of service, 12 years as the Director of Public Works.

Salary: $106,322 - $140,000

About the Department
The McHenry Department of Public Works strives to provide excellence in all services provided to our residents and community. The Public Works Department includes six operating sections – Administration, Fleet Maintenance, Streets Maintenance, Water Division, Wastewater Division, and Utility Division – and is responsible for all services related to the following:

• Coordination of Engineering and Contract Management for Public Improvement Projects
• Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation and Maintenance
• Water Treatment Plant Operation and Maintenance
• Water and Wastewater Utility System Maintenance
• Streets Maintenance and Repair
• Snow Removal and Ice Control
• Fleet Maintenance, including Police
• Forestry

The McHenry Public Works Department includes a Director, Project Engineer, two Administrative Assistants, four Superintendents (Water, Wastewater, Streets, Utility), three crew leaders, one Assistant Wastewater Superintendent, two Fleet Mechanics, and 28 maintenance workers.

The City of McHenry is located in east central McHenry County, Illinois and lies along the Fox River approximately 55 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop. The City has a very active Parks and Recreation Department with over 38 parks and a vibrant Recreation Center. About the Position
The Director of Public Works is currently appointed annually by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council however, the position reports to the City Administrator on a daily basis. Along with other Department Directors, this person is a member of the City’s leadership team and must work well with other departments, businesses, and the community at large. As typical of this position, the Director is responsible for planning, organizing and management of all department operations as outlined above. The Director must be capable of developing and managing a variety of departmental budgets as well as planning, coordinating, and overseeing multi-million dollar capital improvement projects.

Qualified candidates will have 7-10 years of senior level management experience in a public works facility. Candidates should have the proven ability to lead, coach, and manage people and possess excellent management, conflict resolution, and positive interpersonal communication skills. Successful candidates will have proven ability to build and maintain relationships with elected officials, staff, contractors, unions, community leaders and the general public.

Minimum education requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field and candidates must possess Professional Engineer (PE) licensure from the State of Illinois for consideration.
