Salary: $68,930 - $83,785 + Excellent Benefits Package

Under general supervision, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for providing streets, sewer, sanitation, or fleet maintenance; coordinates and administers contracts with outside service providers; and performs related duties as assigned.


The Public Works Supervisor is distinguished from the Maintenance Crew Leader in that it exercises full supervision over a larger number of employees and requires greater scheduling and project planning responsibilities. The Public Works Supervisor classification is assigned to facilities, landscape, streets, sanitation, or fleet maintenance; and has lesser policy-making and budgetary authority than the Public Works Superintendent.

  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; identifies maintenance problems and areas; establishes schedules and methods for providing streets, sewer, sanitation, and fleet maintenance construction services; implements policies and procedures.
  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of staff and contractors responsible for providing streets, sewer, sanitation, and fleet maintenance services including irrigation, pesticide and weed abatement, fleets, street sweeping, sewer, and street maintenance services.
  • Establishes schedules and methods for providing contract maintenance services; monitors work quality and inspect the performance of contractors; verifies and processes contract maintenance invoices for payment.
  • Prepares time, material, and equipment estimates for assigned jobs; requisitions materials as required; orders parts as necessary and ensure parts ordered are received in a timely fashion; selects appropriate equipment and materials to complete the work according to specifications, verbal instructions, and established procedures; adapts equipment and materials to meet specific requirements of the work to be accomplished.
  • Administers a variety of maintenance contracts with outside service providers.
  • Participates in the selection of maintenance staff; provides or coordinates staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
  • Supervises and participates in the preparation of facilities for City-wide events; schedules recreation facilities and plan arrangements for special City programs.
  • Supervises the use and operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles; ensures that tools, equipment, and vehicles are safely operated, maintained, and secured when not in use; schedules the service, repair, and replacement of tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Prepares necessary records and reports; prepares project status reports; maintains records of projects, activities, and materials used; supervises the maintenance of time, material, and equipment use records.
  • Participates in the preparation and administration of the Maintenance Division budget; submits budget recommendations; reviews and provides input on capital improvement projects.
  • Prepares and submits requisitions for supplies, materials, and parts; monitors expenditures and inventory.
  • Receives investigates and responds to inquiries and complaints.
  • Meets with contractors, consultants, and representatives of other agencies to review maintenance needs and standards.


A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is:


  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent plus completion of college course work in public administration, ornamental horticulture,  or a related field.
  • Public Works related degree or certification is highly desirable. 
  • Five years of responsible streets, sewer, sanitation, and/or fleet maintenance work, including some prior lead or supervisory experience.   


  • A valid Class C California driver’s license and the ability to maintain an acceptable driving record and insurability under the City’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.  
  • Must be required to possess the following certifications within 12 months of employment; or prior to successful completion of the probationary period.
    • State Pest Control Advisor's License acknowledged by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

    • Grade 1 Wastewater Operator Certification acknowledged by the California State Water Resources Control Board.
