The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list to fill a current full-time vacancy as well as subsequent vacancies that occur during the life of the list. The Engineering Division of the Public Works Department is seeking a qualified individual to perform journey level inspections of public works construction sites, advising and, when necessary, issuing specific direction to contractors, crews, officers and supervisors in the interest of the City, construction crews, and public safety.  Inspections will also include review of City and private projects/facilities for stormwater compliance and/or reporting compliance.  This classification is distinguished by the independence of action in determining acceptance or rejection of work, stopping work for noncompliance, and negotiating change orders for engineering approval. 

Salary: $55,452.80 - $70,782.40 Annually

Examples of Duties

Inspect the construction of public works capital improvement projects, private land development projects, subdivisions, and encroachments; grade check inspections for sewer, water, and storm drains, streets, curb, sidewalk, base grade, and pavement; inspect materials, workmanship, water pollution control practices, and safety of projects; develop written reports, daily project diaries, prepare pay quantity documents and verify monthly progress payments, assist resident engineer in preparing and substantiating contract change orders, reviewing stormwater pollution prevention plans, and maintaining files; and perform related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:  City and state construction standards; all facets of underground pipelines and conduit; base rock, asphalt concrete, portland cement concrete, and earthwork; safety regulations; materials testing requirements; surveying and engineering terms; stormwater best management practices;  standard specifications for public works construction; and computers, including word-processing programs, database systems, spreadsheets, Web-based software, and use of e-mail.
Ability to:  Interact effectively with the public and employees, read plans and specifications, and effectively communicate with general contractors and engineers.
Education & Experience:  Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma or equivalent and two years advanced training in engineering, engineering technology, the building trades, or a related field.  Typical experience would include three years of progressively responsible experience in public works construction inspection.
Special Requirements: Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.  Possession of California Department of Health Services Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 or the ability to acquire one within one year of appointment is desirable.  Possession of Qualified Storm Water Practitioner (QSP) certification or the ability to acquire one within one year of appointment is desirable.

To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a copy of the DD214, indicating honorable discharge, WITH EACH EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.

Examination Process:  An oral board examination will be administered.
