The Engineering Technician 3 in Materials Testing plays a vital role in ensuring that Material used in County construction projects meets the requirements per the specifications. This position works closely with commercial pit sources obtaining informational samples for sources approval and compaction control of granular materials.  This team-oriented organization provides assurance that the contractors' work and materials conform to the contract, ensuring the public that their tax dollars are being spent responsibly. This position allows for the ability to work independently and will perform meaningful testing of materials.

Salary: $34.80 - $44.25 Hourly

Position Summary

How to Be Successful in the Role:

We are looking for an experience individual with skills and knowledge of materials testing to include concrete, aggregate, and asphalt.  The ability to communicate well in person and in writing is critical to be able to explain details related to contract specifications and materials standards to Contractors. 

Core Responsibilities: 
 

  • Sample, prepare, and test construction materials incorporated into Public Works projects for conformity to specifications using standardized procedures from the WSDOT Construction Manual.   
  • Maintain and calibrate field and laboratory testing equipment. 
  • Coordinate with commercial pit sources for the purposes of obtaining informational samples for source approval, and compaction control of granular material.
  • Coordinate with local hot mix asphalt suppliers to obtain mineral aggregate samples for development of mix designs.   
  • Educate and Perform evaluations of the field staff's testing procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Two years of college or post-high school technical training and two or more years of progressively responsible related experience. 
Additional experience may substitute equally for the recruiting requirements. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Washington state driver's license or the ability to otherwise meet the travel requirements of the positions is be required.  
  • A First Aid Card and CPR certification are required within 60 days of employment.
  • As a condition of employment, the applicant will need to authorize and complete a background check. Information received from the background check is reviewed case-by-case and will not necessarily remove an applicant from consideration.
  • Satisfactory physical condition, as evidenced by a County-approved physical examination, may be required prior to appointment to the position.
