Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, the Assistant Director of Public Works / City Engineer directly oversees divisions of the Public Works Department including Gas Well, Construction Inspections, Capital Improvement Projects and the City's engineering activities, including the design and construction of all streets and drainage facilities, and is responsible for floodplain management. This individual coordinates the review of all planned engineering projects and plans, including schedules, feasibility studies, and cost estimates.

The Assistant Director of Public Works / City Engineer will support all Public Works operations including operations and maintenance of public works infrastructure (water distribution, water treatment, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, streets, drainage, environment services, traffic operations and solid waste).

The Assistant Director of Public Works / City Engineer will support other related duties as needed and directed by the Director of Public Works. These include acting on behalf of the Director in the absence of the Director, representing the City before regulatory agencies, boards, commissions, and preparing special reports for other agencies.

The work is performed with a wide discretion for the exercise of independent judgment in resolving problems in the application of principles and practices of planning, directing, designing and coordinating a variety of citywide projects to include, but not limited to: construction, fiscal, operations or management projects. Supervision may be exercised over construction professionals, professionals in various fields, and administrative or related clerical staff. The incumbent may represent the City at Board and Council hearings as required; conduct research of best practices, prepare reports and provide recommendations. This position shall oversee the affairs of the City in accordance with City policy, state, and federal laws to ensure effective and efficient operation of the Engineering, Gas Well Inspections, Construction Inspections Division and various Capital Improvement Projects.
