Performs work in limited areas of park operations, information and public relations, and maintenance in city parks. Lead teams in specific areas of expertise.

Examples of Duties

•Assists Park Rangers in conducting programs and/or park activities to park visitors, schools, civic groups and other organizations. Provides information to park visitors concerning park operations, programs, policies, facilities and tourist information.

•Assists with coordinating park activities, recreational programs, scouts projects, volunteer activities, etc. Opens city parks daily. Posts picnics shelter reservations. Locks and secures buildings, gates, and equipment at the close of each day.

•Assists in maintaining and repairing park structures, facilities and equipment as needed. Assists in maintaining docks, piers, grills, picnic tables, shelters, signs, trash collection, and related park structures and recreational equipment. Performs routine maintenance of restrooms and other facilities in the absence of maintenance staff.

•Patrols park, recreation and other city property to ensure the safety of the people using these facilities as well as to protect the security and integrity of parkland and city resources, property and equipment. Checks buildings during non-operational hours to ensure security. Notifies Park Ranger/Recreation Professional of hazardous situations, objects, places or persons.

•Assists in the orientation and training of Park Ranger Aides

•Acts as a liaison between the supervisory staff and the WAE employees

•Leads a staff of part time/WAE employees in the completion of various park projects

•Performs routine park inspections and completes inspection reports. Make recommendations to Park Rangers in order to maintain a safe environment for visitors and staff. Assists Park Rangers in maintaining OSHA compliance.

•Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

Graduation from high school or successful completion of GED. One (1) year of experience in park operations and maintenance required, or one (1) year of experience required as a technician, equipment operator, or in a skilled labor intensive position. Some experience in law enforcement preferred. Experience working with farm animals is preferred. Ability to perform heavy outside manual labor; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; good interpersonal skills; and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. May be required to complete a criminal history background check related to this position. Any person offered employment with the city in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances. Any acceptable combination of experience and education which qualifies the applicant for this position may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above.

Supplemental Information

Performs duties under the general supervision of the Park Ranger/Recreation Professional. Frequent contact with the general public. Requires shift work and working nights, weekends and holidays. Duties are performed out of doors in a variety of weather conditions. This is a non-exempt position.
