The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, one of the nation’s largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix. Laboratory Technicians in the Laboratory Services Section of the Environmental Services Division are responsible for monitoring water quality for inorganic and organic constituents in order to maintain regulatory requirements. This position is engaged in the physical, chemical, microbiological, molecular, or process-related analyses of water and wastewater samples in accordance with federal and state laboratory requirements and internal quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) policies and procedures.

  • Positions may be at a water production facility, a wastewater treatment plant, or a compliance laboratory.

The City of Phoenix Police Department provides law enforcement services in the 5th largest city in the nation including protecting life and property, keeping the peace, assisting in the prevention and suppression of crime, apprehending criminals, and enforcing State laws and City ordinances. Laboratory Technicians in the Police Department's Laboratory Services Bureau assist Forensic Scientists and Crime Scene Specialists in laboratory analysis; prepare chemical reagents; maintain laboratory areas; inventory, order, distribute, and replenish laboratory supplies; receive, log, and inventory physical evidence using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); assist in the maintenance of instruments/equipment; prepare discovery information; perform various analytical processes; and perform work as requested.

  • Location: Phoenix Police Department Crime Laboratory, 621 W. Washington, Phoenix, AZ 85003.
  • Work shift: Monday through Friday, 5/8 or 4/10 schedule as determined by the Forensic Science Section Supervisor.
  • The Crime Lab currently has multiple vacancies, which include the Evidence Screening, Firearms, and Latent Print Comparative sections, but may have additional vacancies in other sections in the future.


$17.11 (minimum) - $24.92 (maximum) hourly / $35,589.00 - $51,834.00 annually

Pension Information


  • Three years of standard laboratory tests or instrumental analyses in a public health, crime laboratory, or utility chemical laboratory.
  • Including courses in chemistry, bacteriology, or a related field.

The City of Phoenix has paused plans to implement a federal mandate requiring all city employees be vaccinated against COVID-19. The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, environmental sciences or closely related field.
  • Experience with Environmental Protection Agency and/or Arizona Department of Health Services policies and procedures for laboratory analysis.
  • Experience in a forensic or environmental chemical or an education environment laboratory.
